Neurosurgical procedures require opening and closing the dura mater, the protective outer layer of meningeal membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. Achieving a safe and efficient dural closure is critical to preventing severe postoperative complications. However, existing commercially available grafts carry risks such as inflammation, immune reactions, potential disease transmission, and high costs. The team aims to develop a novel dural graft designed for use in  neurosurgical procedures, offering straight-forward handling to facilitate effective dural closure.

The project is a collaboration between Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin (Dr. Ran Xu, Dr. Anton Früh, Dr. Kiarash Ferdowssian, Prof. Dr. Peter Vajkoczy), Fraunhofer - Institut für Angewandte Polymerforschung IAP (Dr. Wolfdietrich Meyer, Dr. Hadi Bakhshi) and the inter-university research platform New Practice in cooperation between TU Berlin and UdK Berlin (Prof. Albert Lang).

The project is funded from the SPARK program at Charité.
We are glad to see programs like SPARK facilitating the translation of research into clinical practice.
Masters students in M.A. Design and Computation will also collaborate.
